I have DCHP on eth0, and a static IP addr on eth0:0. Why is looping over find's output bad practice? As for setting fixed IP - you can use nm-applet to setup fixed IP using NetworkManager service. I don't understand your concise advice and I suspect this isn't the place for it anyway.
