Also it turns out that WiFi really was broken, the thread where I downloaded Linux for my tab said WiFi was working but I guess it was written falsely. Did you build your own kernel? This is why on older systems, even if you have no floppy connected, you'll see an A: drive in Windows if you have the BIOS set to say there is one. The regular Linux network troubleshooting commands I tried result in rather cryptic output in this enviroment, so I was on the wrong track thinking it was a hardware problem. useful reference
