Members have access to different forum appearance options, and many more functions. The effect is that the mail no longer exists on the server but still does exist on the local client. From that point on the Mail app has been responsive and I haven't had any issues with deleting unwanted emails. Now go into the Trash folder, select the mail above, press and hold CMD and click the mail below.

Start the Apple Mail application. Apple Mail uses an elaborate folder structure and the final mail just has a message ID in it's name. You can not post a blank message. So somehow this one email was malformed to the point that the Mail app could not deal with it, but still managed to cause a lot of problems. My experience is that Mail has trouble performing operations on large amounts of data. –jaume Nov 19 '12 at 8:47 @jaume That would take insanely long time.
