Are you sure there are no other Apple devices (or non-Apple for that matter) in the vicinity that it might ever have been paired with? I changed the batteries and tried the reset and still they look to pair but without logging in I am stuck 🙁 welcome all tips!!!!

Try booting your iMac from the recovery partition and see if the keyboard works there. You can now release the power button, type the pairing code on the keyboard and then press return.
