my PC comes up fine in the finder on my computer, not so sure what went wrong with yours. the PC's wont always appear on the sidebar, so try conencting to them manually by hitting +K and typing in smb://ipaddressofpc . I am able to get sharing to work by setting the IP explicitly for the machine I wanted to connect to with Connect to Server via Finder. So, I can access from the PC to the MacBook fine now.

when the dialog comes up for 'connect to server', make sure the path is smb://foo.bar/shareName, (where foo.bar is the hostname, or the IP, depending on your situation...). yup that should work fine. Choose Go > “Connect to Server,” open the pop-up menu to the far right of the Server Address field, then choose a recent server.
