People think that photography is easy once you have the right equipment. However, that’s not the case once you try to take a good shot. This is a procedure that requires a lot of knowledge and experience. Pressing the button is the easiest part, but capturing exactly what you wanted is hard.
Most professional photographers hate most of their shots. They take hundreds of almost the same pictures, but they may only like one of them. They know that capturing the right moment can take a lot of time and should be patient. With newbies, it’s even harder to take a good shot.
There is a so-called Exposure Triangle. The most important thing in photography is light. The whole magic is to capture enough, but not too much light. The three factors that account for the captured light are Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO. We have a little description of each one.
Aperture is the size of the lens opening. If the opening is smaller, the aperture is bigger. The light captured by the camera depends on it. If the aperture is bigger the camera will try to capture more light. The depth is also bigger if the aperture is higher.
Shutter speed is the amount of time the shutter will be open. It is measured in seconds and can be 1/200s, 1/60s, 5s… Slower shutter speed will capture more light, but this can be tricky. If you try to take a photo of something that is on the move, you will need a slower shutter speed. Otherwise, the object will get blurry and you won’t like the results.
The ISO is the sensitivity of the sensor to light. Higher ISO will give better results in the dark but will make more noise. That is the reason why so many night shots have a lot of grain all over them. Finding the right ISO can be very hard for every photographer. For every condition, you should change the ISO.
There are a lot of courses on the topic which can be very helpful. Most professional photographers have a lot of knowledge on the topic. However, you will need a lot of experience and experimenting with your camera to take a great result.
Holding the camera properly is very important too. There is not a “correct” way to hold a camera, but the idea is always the same. You shouldn’t shake the camera when you take a picture. Most times it will get blurry and you won’t be satisfied with the results.
Post-processing of a photo is very important too. All the photos you see on the internet have been processed in some way. However, when you think of post-processing you shouldn’t think that the whole picture will be changed. The tweaks you do after the picture is taken should be very small. Just to take out things that you don’t like in it. Without post-processing images don’t look good, but with overdoing it, they become even worse.
To learn how to take great photos you should practice daily. Go out and shoot different things in different conditions. That’s the only way to learn how to take good shots.
